This Model 1849 Pocket Revolver belongs to a rarefied group of Colt percussion firearms decorated with profuse engraving, relief carving, and flush or low relief gold inlay, of which about twenty examples are known to survive. Made at Samuel Colt’s (1814–1862) direction for exhibition at international fairs and for presentation to important officials and foreign and domestic heads of state, including the kings of Sweden and Denmark and the Czar of Russia, they functioned as diplomatic gifts and demonstrations of the company’s artistic and technical achievements.
I created this work to test my texturing abilities. All of my previous works were created using SubD but this time I introduced ZBrush to my workflow. The main challenge was to recreate the pattern accurately since original images was in poor quality and there was no opportunity to extract information using different filters. Everything is hand-drawn except the cylinder. For cylinder I improved one very poor image with the help of AI and slightly modified it in Photoshop. This model of the revolver is so old that it was impossible to find the real blueprints. I had to modify the proportions a little to connect all the elements and preserve their functionality. Fun fact: one of the brothers of this revolver is stored in Hermitage museum, Saint-Petersburg. Sadly, I didn't have a chance to get there and look at it before I started my work.
Software: 3Ds Max for modeling, ZBrush for high poly, RizomUV for UV, Marmoset Toolbag for baking and rendering, texturing in Substance Painter, editing in Photoshop.
